Love to travel but hate the heat and the crowds?

A new study has revealed the best countries to explore this year, for those who love ‘average’ temperatures and lesser-known destinations.

Some of the top destinations include Medellin in Colombia and George in South Africa.

The study, conducted by tailor-made holiday platform TravelLocal, analysed internal booking data from the past year to find a list of the 30 most popular countries to travel to in 2024.

Research was then conducted to find lesser-known destinations within each country with the most ‘average’ temperatures across the year.

A shift in travellers’ priorities TravelLocal has reported an increase in customers being more environmentally conscious and choosing to avoid hot temperatures by travelling off-peak instead.

According to Google Trends the term ‘sustainable travel’ has also increased by 44% in the past year.

“We’re seeing a shift in people preferring to book either during the shoulder seasons or choosing milder destinations so they can enjoy the destination’s culture more comfortably. We’re predicting that off-peak travel will continue to increase in popularity over the next few years. This is great from a responsible travel and social point of view as many people don’t realise that travelling during busier periods and to more popular destinations puts more strain on resources and leads to an increase in waste and pollution levels. When you travel off-peak or to lesser-known areas, you’re supporting the local economy and its communities by providing income during a slower season. It also means that you’re not contributing to over-tourism, something that is becoming an increasing concern across the globe.“

Without further ado, below are the top six destinations where you can enjoy ‘average’ temperatures - between 20°C and 30°C - throughout the year, and some might surprise you.

Medellin, Colombia

Medellin - or ‘The City of Eternal Spring’ as it is often referred to - has seen a huge transformation over the past 20-30 years, once being deemed an unsafe place to visit due to the level of crime. These days, Medellin is known for its incredible culture, friendly locals and delicious street food. Situated in the Aburrá Valley and surrounded by stunning views of the Andes Mountains, Medellin also enjoys an average temperature of 21°C throughout the year, making it the perfect city to explore.

Trujillo, Peru

If you’re looking for beautiful architecture and intriguing archaeology, look no further than Trujillo. The third largest city in Peru has an average temperature of 23°C twelve months a year, with very little rain. Trujillo is ideally situated near the coast with easy access to beautiful beaches for when you want to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

George, South Africa

This lesser-known South Africa town is an ideal base for exploring the Garden Route coastline and all its natural beauty. Located east of Cape Town, the temperatures in George dance between 20°C and 25°C throughout the year with very low rainfall levels. Expect incredible views of the Outeniqua Mountains and alpine forest.
