Love to travel but hate the heat and the crowds?
“We’re seeing a shift in people preferring to book either during the shoulder seasons or choosing milder destinations so they can enjoy the destination’s culture more comfortably. We’re predicting that off-peak travel will continue to increase in popularity over the next few years. This is great from a responsible travel and social point of view as many people don’t realise that travelling during busier periods and to more popular destinations puts more strain on resources and leads to an increase in waste and pollution levels. When you travel off-peak or to lesser-known areas, you’re supporting the local economy and its communities by providing income during a slower season. It also means that you’re not contributing to over-tourism, something that is becoming an increasing concern across the globe.“

TravelLocal booking data from the past 12-month period (Sept 22 – Sept 23) was used to find a list of the top 30 most popular destinations based on the number of bookings. Expert knowledge and desk research was then used to find a list of the lesser-known destinations within each country. The following information was found for each destination; average temperature across the year, number of months with temperatures between20 and 30°C and number of months with below 10 days’ rainfall. The top destinations list is based on the destinations with the highest number of months with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. The other data factors were then used to back up our findings and to add additional context. Full methodology can be found on the website. Google Trends data accurate as of 21/02/2024.
